Rules Overview 3 – Mysticism Concepts

Calamity is going to be using a completely new rules system, you will see familiar elements from different game systems as well as some elements we believe are unique. We understand that many of you will have a hard time deciding on a character until you see the rules, please be assured we are working diligently to finalize the rules and begin playtests.

In this post we are going to review Mysticism:

Mysticism

Calamity will include “magic” in the form of our mystic paths. We’ll let you argue in-game if Tribal Shamanism is truly speaking with the spirits of nature or “heathen magic”. Our mystic paths include:

Theurgy. Theurgy is the practice of performing Invocations with the intention of summoning the presence of one or more extra planar entities that exist outside of normal space-time. These invocations are done with the goal of temporarily binding the entity with Sigils and exacting power that the Theurgist stores in a mystic Focus for later use.

Manteia. Manteia, colloquially referred to as “Spellslinging”, is the practice of playing a game of chance against Fate itself. The Spellslinger wagers their Luck in the form of chips against the hand held within a ritual to win power that is stored in a mystic Focus for later use.

Tribal Shamanism. Shamanism is the practice of performing Ceremonies in order to appeal to a Manitou, a spirit of nature, requesting they grant the Shaman access to their power in the form of Favors. These Favors will allow the Shaman hold the power of a particular Manitou for later use.

The Church. There are many denominations of the Ohmnian faith, of these the Church of the Deliverer is the most evangelical. Its followers believe in the literal teachings of the faith that many other denominations consider metaphorical. Followers of the Church perform Sacraments calling upon Ohm, the Supreme Architect of the universe through Hymns, Sermons, and Blessings in order to use their Faith to channel the power of Ohm.

Tsung Sorcery. Sorcery is the practice of performing Rites compelling the Yaomo, spirits of the dead, to give the sorcerer their Chi. In its positive form this may be accomplished by communing with an ancestor, but many sorcerers bind other spirits to power their Chi. The sorcerer can use the Chi to channel powers from the Underworld.
