State of the Game

Hello everyone, it has been a very busy Summer and we wanted to share where we stand with Calamity.

Rules

The rules system is nearing completion; you can view them on the System page. There are several areas where we are still hammering out the details. We are working diligently to finish up these sections:

  • Specific lists of mystic rituals and effects for the Mysticism paths
  • Production Skills: Artificin’ & Mad Science
  • Land Plot System: Managing in game land resources like mines, ranches, lumbering, etc.
Over Labor Day weekend we ran some rules playtests. We are happy to report that when we tested a variety of scenarios the system played out the way we wanted. Obviously we identified a few areas to add clarifications & modifications, but overall we all felt like it was a successful test.

We intend to run one more staff-only rules playtest, then open up two larger ones for the playerbase at large to participate. Our goal for this is late October, keep an eye out for dates!

Survey

We are making arrangements for our first events, and we need to get a more solid idea of how many people will be joining us for Calamity, either as players or full time volunteers. We have created an initial survey to gather some general information about our playerbase, PLEASE fill this out.

Events

We have them! Our first 3-day events are now on the books, scheduled for March 31st and June 2nd 2017 at AH Stephens State Park.

We need your help to finish booking our first season. One of the survey questions will ask if you are willing to pre-register for the first event. The more people we get to pre-register for the first two events, the sooner we can book out the last two events for 2017. We are offering a one-time Button reward of 5 buttons for pre-registering for the first game(s).

We are also looking at holding a special event a month before the March 3-day (current tentative date is February 25th). We want to have an event where the players are crossing the Mississippi River on a riverboat enroute to Carrion Creek.

We have been talking with the Southern Belle riverboat in Chattanooga, TN. We can rent out a floor of their riverboat for a two-hour dinner cruise. This would be a non-combat event that would include dinner, gambling and a cash bar. The goal would be to raise money for the game, and to vicariously live out our Maverick fantasies of playing poker on a real freaking riverboat! There is a minimum cost for us to get this venue and we will only pull the trigger if we get enough pre-registered players.

  • Cost will be $100 a head if get the minimum of 35 players
  • If we get 50 players pre-registered the cost will drop to $75 per head
  • If we get 75 players pre-registered the cost will drop to $60 per head
  • If we get 100 players pre-registered the cost will drop to $50 per head

Donations & Volunteering

Many people have been asking how to help the game and/or earn Buttons. The survey has a question asking what skills you have that you would be willing to use to help us out. Sewing, creating weapons, programming, creating puzzles, etc., we can use a wide variety of skills as we move toward our first game.

We have updated our Amazon Wish List. You can always find information about supporting the game on our Donations page.

There are also a number of props we want that we do not necessarily want to post publicly, so Amazon Gift Cards are welcome as well. This helps us maintain a bit of mystery!

We’ll be arranging some crafting days, specifically around creating melee weapons and painting and modding Nerf guns. More hands make less work, please come out and help!

Character Concepts

We have had several players submit high level character ideas for us to review. This gives us the opportunity to see what types of characters our players are thinking of playing, and thus helps us develop plotlines to help facilitate that type of play. It also provides us an early opportunity to give players feedback on their ideas to help them fit our game world.

Our staff is working on getting the culture packets finished, but please do not wait to send in your high level concepts!

We are working on setting up a few social times where staff will hang out at a bar, gaming store, etc and be available to meet with players, answer questions, demo some of the rituals and get to know our players. If you have an idea for a place/date please let us know.
Please send any emails to the staff@calamitylarp.com address and not our personal accounts.

On behalf of the Calamity Staff I cannot begin to express how excited we are to have the opportunity to share this world and story with you. Thank you for being part of our community and we look forward to getting those surveys back by September 19th!
